The BLM campgrounds are a great opportunity for people who love the outdoors and are on a budget. You can camp for $5 per night. There is a dump station, several bathrooms with pit toilets, and potable water. Ours is a beautiful spot that overlooks the lake. Crowley Lake campground is about twelve miles south of Mammoth Lakes, California just off highway 395. It is a delightful spot with cheerful quiet neighbors. There are tents, small travel trailers, big RV's, truck campers, and even a yurt camped here. The nights are cool which makes for sleeping snugly, and the days warm up to the upper 60's or low 70's. Just perfect weather for hiking.
Speaking of hiking, there are endless trails and roads to explore in the area. We hiked up a trail today that led us up one of the smaller mountains and at the top we could see McGee Creek with aspen and cottonwood trees lining her banks. It was absolutely gorgeous with the mountaintops around us still covered in snow.
My favorite thing that we have done since we landed here is soaking in the nearby hot springs. The water is crystal clear and the perfect temperature. Unlike some of the other hot springs we have visited, these are amazingly clean. The people who are using them are not destroying the natural surroundings, but preserving them.
